Clinical skill alone is not enough.

Trauma doesn't only wound the mind and body — it fractures identity, severs belonging, and ruptures the deepest sense of meaning. Yet most clinical training leaves practitioners unprepared to engage that spiritual dimension with confidence.

The result: moral injury goes unnamed. Spiritual bypassing goes unaddressed. Clients who describe their pain in explicitly spiritual language receive responses that don't match their experience.

"The fragmentation of spiritual identity, while often a source of distress, can also be viewed as an invitation to a more authentic and integrated sense of self."

— Christopher Shea, Reclaiming Wholeness

Reclaiming Wholeness closes that gap — not by promoting any religious tradition, but by equipping practitioners with culturally responsive, ethically grounded tools for spiritual assessment, ritual design, and social reconnection.

Five chapters. A complete clinical framework.

From initial disruption through integration to community reconnection — a full arc of trauma-informed spiritual care.

Disruption

How trauma fragments spiritual identity, produces moral injury, and disrupts meaning and belonging — with culturally responsive assessment frameworks.

Integration

A step-by-step clinical workflow for weaving spiritual assessment into standard intake and screening — including values-aligned service planning and the Counsel Table method.

Reconnection

Restoring belonging through ritual design, community partnerships, and post-traumatic growth strategies for diverse client populations.

Case Studies & Ethics

Real clinical cases — a veteran navigating moral injury and a widow confronting grief and ambivalence — with documentation guidance and ethical boundaries.

The Path Forward

Sustaining an integrative spiritual care practice across a career — continuing education, self-care, and professional development for the whole practitioner.

About the Author

A rare voice bridging the clinical and the sacred

Christopher Shea began his career as a hospital chaplain and spiritual retreat leader — spending years sitting with people in their darkest moments before clinical training gave him the language and tools to formalize that work. Since 1994, he has served as a clinician, clinical director, and administrator in substance use disorder and mental health settings.

Today he is the founder of Lifesjourney Life Coaching, LLC, an adjunct graduate professor of Counseling at McDaniel College, and a national speaker at professional seminars and conferences. That rare combination — pastoral depth and clinical rigor — is what makes Reclaiming Wholeness different from both the self-help titles and the academic textbooks that occupy this space.
